My favorite TV series about multiverse
Since I always have a ton of book/movie/TV series recommendations for my friends, I figured it could be a great bonus content for the newsletter. So here's the first one in the series. Enjoy!
Well, I have a confession to make: I watch A TON of TV series. I have subscription to Netflix (obviously), Hulu (hate their ads but love their shows), Apple TV+ (because their production budgets are huge and usually they know how to use them wisely), Disney+ (because every now and then they release something cool), Amazon Prime Video (because I have Amazon Prime for faster deliveries, so why not have another streaming platform at my disposal?), and also every now and then I subscribe to Peacock (they had a beautiful adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s “Everything I know about love”) and HBO (their shows are creme de la creme but sometimes I come to the point when I’ve watched everything I wanted to watch and so I hit ‘Unsubscribe’ only to resubscribe months later).
You can wake me up in the middle of the night, brief me on what show you’re looking for, and I’ll give you a list of recommendations that meet your criteria (this is not an invite to call me late at night to check if what I’m saying is true).
Last month I watched two shows about multiverse and it got me thinking…why not make a list of my favorites on the topic? If you’re as fascinated by the idea of parallel universes as I am, chances are you’re going to enjoy them.
Dark matter (2024), available on Apple TV+
A middle aged man lives an ordinary but happy life with his wife and teenage son in Chicago. One evening he goes to a pub to celebrate some career achievement of his good friend and then he spends a whole season trying to find his way back home because, well, getting lost in multiverse is no joke. Especially, if someone smart does not want you to come back.
IMDB: 7,8
My own rating: at least 8,5
Dark (2017), available on Netflix
Just as the name suggests, this story is pretty dark. A small town in Germany, a nuclear power plant, gloomy weather, potential apocalypse, and family drama does not sound like a particularly positive combination, I agree. And yet there is something magnetic about this story and there’s so much light trying to make its way through the cracks of the dark reality.
IMDB: 7,8
My own rating: 8
Loki (2021), available at Disney+
If not for my husband, I’d probably never watch “Loki” because, well, it’s Marvel and I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise. However, I have to admit that this story is chef’s kiss. I loved the humor, I loved the character development, I loved how the beautifully the concept of multiverse is visualized in the story. The best part is you don’t need to know much about Marvel stories in general and Loki’s story in particular to enjoy the show.
If you’re looking for a multiverse story that’s not as dark as “Dark”, give it a try and let me know what you think.
IMDB: 8,2
My personal rating: strong 8
The OA (2016), available on Netflix
This story has so many layers to it that I’m not sure I can summarize it in a few sentences, so let’s just say it’s about friendship and love and passion and science and parenthood and the crazy world we all live in but know so little about.
Given how many great shows are there waiting to be watched, I rarely rewatch something. The OA is one of the exceptions. I’ve watched it twice and I can imagine watching it once again some time in the future.
IMDB: 7,8
My own rating: 9
Counterpart (2017), available on Netflix, Apple TV and more
I guess it was one of the very first multiverse stories I’ve consumed. And I remember how much it impressed me back then. Now as we have so many similar stories to pick from, this one would not be my number one choice, but it is still a high-quality show worth your time. If you’re into all things spy and secret agents, if you like conspiracy theories, if you’re intro government/United Nations stories, this one is for you.
Also, it’s J.K. Simmons playing the main character (and I’m obsessed with him after watching “Whiplash”).
IMDB: 8
My own rating: 8
Constellation (2024), available on Apple TV+
Technically, this one cannot be my recommendation because I haven’t watched it yet, but it’s on my list and I felt like sharing it with you, too. Maybe we can watch it around the same time and discuss in DMs later.
All I know that it’s the story of an astronaut who comes back to Earth from a space mission only to find out her life is not exactly hers because…well, she made it to some different version of her life. Given that it’s Apple TV+, chances are the production will not disappoint.
IMDB: 6,7 (hmm!)
My own rating: yet to come
And that's a wrap for today. Let me know what you think of the new format and…happy binge-watching! 🍿
